Former NBA gamer Antonio Blakeney-- who is called but not charged in the current indictment-- is to have been hired by conspirators while playing in China

Twenty-six people have been charged with repairing US college and Chinese professional basketball video games in an alleged global criminal conspiracy, federal district attorneys stated Thursday.

"We allege a substantial global criminal conspiracy of ... gamers, alumni and expert gamblers who repaired video games across the nation and poisoned the American spirit of competition for monetary gain," stated federal prosecutor David Metcalf.

"This was a huge plan. It covered the world of college basketball," he informed an interview.

It is the most recent scandal to rock the world of US sports, after 2 sprawling federal examinations resulted in the arrest of an NBA coach and gamer in October.

The indictment unveiled Thursday says an illegal sports betting network originated in China in or about September 2022.

"Because it proved rewarding, they chose to take their operation Stateside to the world of NCAA Division I men's basketball," said Metcalf, referring to the hugely popular US college league.

Defendants allegedly then provided more than 39 US college gamers bribes of up to $30,000 per game, and made wagers amounting to millions of dollars.

More than a dozen of the offenders have played college basketball within the past 3 years.

Former NBA player Blakeney is "charged somewhere else," according to the indictment.

If founded guilty on the bribery charges, offenders might confront five years in prison.

Sports wagering in the majority of US states was prohibited until 2018, but leagues have actually given that rushed to participate the multi-billion dollar gold mine of legalized betting.

The NBA last year stated it is examining league policies to ensure players understand gambling's "dire dangers".
